The Beginning of Viking Metal Another subgenre in the heavy metal community is Viking Metal. Viking metal is often a combination of folk, death and black new metal music. Viking metal isn't very popular in heavy metal. This is probably because it's a fairly new genre of heavy metal. Viking metal elements often include quick fast beats, dramatic full sounds and keyboard characteristics. An imagination, fantasy themes and mythology will be the strong features in the lyrics of Viking metal. Viking metal has been marked as being satanic, this is hundred percent not true. Their heavy distortion and evils sounds is just the style of the music. There are no songs that talk about the devil of Satan. In countries like Finland and Norway, Viking metal has strong roots. Viking metal incorporates instruments like the accordion, harp and panflute into their music. In Viking metal you will find their vocals consist of roars and deep growls. Viking metal does give a dark and gray feeling behind the music. Black metal has influence some of the techniques and style of Viking metal. Viking metal songs usually consist of warfare and god in their music. The earliest signs of Viking metal were Led Zeppelin. Led Zeppelin wrote songs that includes some famous Vikings and gods. Viking metal uses choir singing in their music. Black Sabbath experimented with this style of vocals. Rising Force by Yngwie J. Malmsteen was the first Viking metal song. They had the song "I am a Viking" in 1985. The first band to be considered Viking metal was Bathory. One of Bathory's next album, "Blood Fire Death" was an album with both Viking and Black metal elements. Bathory continued to make Viking metal, but started to incorporate Folk metal instruments. This Bathory album is to be considered one of the best Viking metal albums. The style of Viking metal is often a reference for pagan culture. Viking metal bands usually are formed in northern Europe. Countries in northern Europe have most Viking metal bands. Black metal is most Viking metal building blocks to their music. Viking metal music usually is dramatic, mythological and epic. You will find other metal elements like Traditional and Folk. Bands often seemed in English language which gives them a wider audience in the European area.
